A walkthrough of the intake process so your first appointment feels less unknown.
Booking a first psychiatric appointment is a real step, and it's normal to feel some nerves about what actually happens once you're in the room (or on the video call). Here's what to expect.
Before the Appointment
You'll typically fill out intake paperwork covering your health history, current symptoms, medications, and what's bringing you in. Being as honest and complete as possible here helps your provider get a fuller picture before you even sit down together.
During the Evaluation
Your provider will ask about your symptoms, how long you've noticed them, how they affect daily life — work, relationships, sleep, energy — and your personal and family mental health history. This isn't a test with right or wrong answers; it's a conversation aimed at understanding your specific situation.
Current symptoms and how long you've experienced them
Past treatment, including medications tried and what did or didn't help
Family history of mental health or substance use conditions
Your goals — what you'd like to feel different in your day-to-day life
After the Evaluation
Your provider will talk through possible next steps, which might include a diagnosis, a treatment plan, medication options, a referral to therapy, or a combination. Nothing is decided without you — treatment plans are built together, and it's completely fine to ask questions or say a suggested option doesn't feel right for you.
You're Allowed to Just Be Starting
Whether this is your first time ever seeking psychiatric care or you're looking for a fresh start with a new provider, the first appointment is designed to meet you exactly where you are — no judgment, no assumptions.
